I’m trying to understand the key values shown in a DisplayCAL (DispcalGUI) verification report. In particular, what counts as an acceptable result for:
- Brightness error (cd/m²)
- White point error (ΔE)
- Maximum neutral error (ΔE)
- Average neutral error (ΔE)
Are there recommended ranges, or do acceptable values depend on the intended workflow and accuracy requirements?

DispcalGUI (at least the recent versions) will display you recommended error sizes in verification report and will tick samples which are too off.
There is not too much one can say about recommended values unless you specify your workflow and final requirements.

There isn’t one universal “good” range for those values. Acceptable results depend on your workflow, target settings, and how critical color accuracy is for the final output.
In practice, DisplayCAL/DispcalGUI already helps here: recent versions show recommended tolerances in the verification report and mark samples that are outside the acceptable range.
A simple way to read the report is:
- Lower error values are better.
- If samples are flagged/ticked as too far off, the calibration/profile is missing the target by more than the software recommends.
- Brightness error should be close to your chosen luminance target.
