How should I cut and store 6x7 medium format film for scanning on a Nikon 9000?

I shoot both 6x6 and 6x7. For 6x6, cutting into 3-frame strips works well for 4-row archive sleeves and scans fine on my Nikon 9000. With 6x7, cutting into 3,3,2,2 causes problems: 3-frame strips barely fit standard sleeves, and the scanner only detects the first two frames on a 3-frame strip. I can work around it by scanning as 6x9 with offset and cropping, but it’s awkward. What’s the best way to cut, store, and scan 6x7 negatives?

Wasting a sleeve is the right way to go unfortunately. If you're extremely careful yes they will barely fit in as 3s, but I've found that they'll slip out one edge and damage your film if you breath wrong.

Definitely do not go with an internegative (rephotographing your negatives) process, I'm not sure where that came from.

The most practical answer is to cut 6x7 into 2-frame strips for standard sleeves and easier scanning, even if that uses an extra sleeve. Three-frame 6x7 strips are a tight fit in many archival pages and can slip or get damaged.

If you want to keep 3-frame strips, look for wider archival sleeving made for longer medium-format strips. That can solve the storage issue, but it won’t necessarily fix the scanner’s frame detection.

For scanning on the Nikon 9000, one workable approach is to scan the first two frames normally, then reinsert the strip upside-down so the scanner can detect the remaining frame, and rotate the image afterward. Your 6x9-plus-offset workaround is also valid, just less convenient.

So the cleanest option is: use 2-frame strips for convenience and safety, or use wider sleeves if you strongly prefer 3-frame storage.
