In Photoshop, my new documents are opening with a black background instead of white. I may have accidentally changed the foreground/background color settings while following a tutorial. How can I switch the default background back to white when creating a new file?

Press the "D" key. This will reset to the default background color of white, and foreground color of black. You can also press "X" to switch them back and forth.
After you have done that, a new layer will be the color of the current background color which you have reset to white. If you close Photoshop and reopen, it should retain that setting.

If you changed Photoshop’s foreground/background swatches, press D to reset them to the defaults: foreground = black and background = white. You can press X to swap those two colors if needed.
For new documents, Photoshop also has a Background Contents option in the New Document dialog. Set that to White if you want newly created files to open with a white background instead of black or transparent.
So, in short:
- Press D to restore the default swatch colors
- In the New Document window, choose Background Contents: White
After resetting it, Photoshop should keep that setting for future new files.
