How do I move Lightroom Classic’s secondary display to the correct monitor on Windows 10?

On Windows 10 with three monitors, Lightroom Classic suddenly started opening its secondary display/preview on the wrong screen. My main Lightroom window is on one monitor and I want the secondary display on a different 4K monitor, but Lightroom is now sending it to a third screen/TV instead. Is there a way to reassign or move Lightroom Classic’s second monitor display back to the correct monitor?

Seems I found the solution faster than expected, here are the steps:

  1. Virtually switched monitor [3] and [2] in Display Settings.
  2. Switched Lightroom's preview window to "windowed" mode. That way it was still displayed on wrong monitor, but a corner of the windows was stretching out from monitor [3] to monitor [2] which I could grab.
  3. Moved preview window to monitor [2].
  4. Switched Lightroom's preview window back to "full screen" mode.
  5. Virtually switched monitor [3] and [2] in Display Settings back to their original positions.

And after a few tests so far of closing and re-opening preview window and whole Lightroom, it looks like Lightroom now memorised the right monitor as secondary.

Also, someone pointed this change: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/whats-new/2020-2.html#otherenhancements

  • In Lightroom Classic, choose Lightroom Classic > Preferences (macOS) or Edit > Preferences (Windows).
  • Select the Display tab and choose a monitor for the secondary window.

Yes. In current Lightroom Classic versions, check Preferences > Display—there may be an option to choose which monitor the Secondary Display uses.

If that option isn’t available or Lightroom is stuck on the wrong screen, these workarounds were reported to help:

  1. Set the secondary display to Windowed mode so it can be repositioned.
  2. If the window is off-screen or hard to grab, temporarily rearrange the monitor order in Windows Display Settings so part of the window becomes accessible.
  3. Drag the secondary display window to the correct monitor.
  4. Switch it back to Full Screen if desired.
  5. Restore your normal monitor arrangement. Lightroom may then remember the correct screen.

Another shortcut-based workaround is to toggle the secondary display off/on with F11, then use Windows key + Left/Right Arrow to move the Lightroom window between monitors.

So the practical fixes are: use Lightroom’s Display preferences if available, or temporarily make the secondary display movable and place it on the monitor you want.
