How do I duplicate a drawn mask in darktable for use in another module?

I want to reuse a drawn mask from one darkroom module in another module, but then edit the second mask without changing the original. What’s the correct way to copy or duplicate the mask so the two versions can be modified independently?

  1. In the darkroom, go to the left panel
  2. At the bottom of the panel, you have a masks management module
  3. In the module, you have a list of modules using masks and then a list of masks
  4. On the relevant mask, right click and select "duplicate this shape". You might also change the masks names to make them easier to distinguish
  5. Retrieve the duplicate mask in your other module and edit it to fit your needs.

Yes—duplicate the mask shape rather than reusing the same mask reference.

In darktable’s darkroom view, open the left panel and find the masks management module near the bottom. There you’ll see the masks and the modules using them. Right-click the mask you want to copy and choose duplicate this shape. You can rename the masks to keep them easy to tell apart.

Then, in the other module, select that duplicated mask instead of the original. Because it’s a separate duplicated shape, you can modify it without affecting the mask used in the first module.
