How do fixed-focus cameras and webcams keep subjects sharp without autofocus?

Some cameras and webcams don’t appear to have a user-controlled autofocus system. How do they keep subjects in focus? Are they typically set to focus at infinity or at a fixed distance such as the hyperfocal distance, and does that increase the minimum distance at which subjects appear sharp?

Something that cannot focus simply does not focus. This how most disposable cameras are made. They have a fixed-focus lens where the focus plane is at a certain distance and the aperture is small enough to give a large depth-of-field.
With small sensors like in webcams and other tiny cameras, the effect is multiplied because depth-of-field is huge. In other words almost everything is acceptably sharp despite not being in focus. The best way is to focus at the hyperfocal distance which means everything to infinity is sharp enough, starting at some distance before the focus-distance. Some ultra-compact cameras can even fix their focus at the hyperfocal distance.

If a camera truly has no focusing mechanism, it doesn’t refocus at all: it uses a fixed-focus lens. These are usually designed with a small aperture and a very small sensor, which creates very large depth of field, so a wide range of distances looks acceptably sharp.
They are often set near the hyperfocal distance rather than simply at infinity. That way, everything from some nearer distance out to infinity is reasonably sharp. The tradeoff is that very close subjects may fall outside that acceptable range, so yes, fixed-focus designs usually have a minimum distance where sharpness starts to look acceptable.
Also, not every small camera is fixed-focus. Some webcams and compact cameras do have autofocus and physically move a lens element using a tiny motor or similar actuator, with focus determined electronically or by software.
