How can I work with Leica M Monochrom DNG files in Apple Aperture?

Apple Aperture initially did not support Leica M Monochrom DNG files. A clunky workaround is to open the DNG files in Adobe software, export them as TIFFs, and then import the TIFFs into Aperture, but that loses the ability to work with the original DNG data inside Aperture. Is there a better workaround, or does Aperture now support these files directly?

There may be a work around using Adobe DNG Converter. I don't have a Mac to try it on, but it can convert many DNGs to a more generic type.

Yes. According to the community response, Aperture now supports Leica M Monochrom DNG files directly, so the TIFF export workaround should no longer be necessary.

If you’re still using an older Aperture version that won’t open them, one possible interim workaround is Adobe DNG Converter, which may convert the files into a more broadly compatible DNG variant. That can be preferable to exporting TIFFs because TIFF removes the original raw workflow benefits.

So the best path is:

  1. Update Aperture and your system’s camera RAW support if possible.
  2. If direct support still isn’t available, try Adobe DNG Converter before resorting to TIFF export.
