How can I work around the Canon EOS M shutter lock issue when using Magic Lantern?

After installing Magic Lantern on a Canon EOS M, the camera sometimes locks up and won’t take a photo because the shutter appears blocked. This seems to happen more often with some lenses than others. Are there any known fixes or reliable workarounds for this issue?

Temporary fixes seem to include partially dismounting and remounting the lens, or power-cycling the camera.
It looks like this is an actual bug in the EOS M build, and they're having a very hard time diagnosing what's going on, although they now suspect it's an issue with the bootloader. I'd suggest going to the thread on this bug and seeing if there's anything you can do to help, testing or debugging-wise.

This appears to be a known Magic Lantern EOS M bug rather than a normal camera setting issue. Based on the community reports, there isn’t one guaranteed fix, but these workarounds may help:
- Power the camera off and back on.
- Slightly unmount and remount the lens.
- Try a higher-quality SD card; one user reported the problem disappeared after replacing a cheap card with a better one.
- Check the camera setting for shooting without lens: Custom Functions > Enable “Release shutter w/o lens.”
Because reports vary by lens, the issue may show up more with certain lenses or combinations of lens and card. If the problem only started after installing Magic Lantern, the most likely cause is the Magic Lantern build itself, and following the relevant Magic Lantern bug thread for updates, testing, or newer builds is the best long-term path.
