How can I use focus magnification on a Sony A7 with adapted manual lenses?

I'm using a Sony A7 with a lens adapter and manual-focus lenses. Focus peaking appears to work, but focus magnification doesn't always activate automatically with adapted lenses. Does focus magnification work with all adapted lenses, and if not, how can I enable and use it manually?

Alright, guess I was mistaken because Focus Peaking works by default but the Focus Magnification doesn't work with adapters.

However, I found online a workaround and just set it up to test - worked perfectly.

Full detailed instructions head to Silvermac at http://www.silvermac.com/2015/07/29/sony-a7-ii-using-mf-assist-with-the-lens-adapters/

Basically, turn Focus Magnification on and the time to No Limit. Then go to Custom Buttons and choose one to use for it. Hit that button once then the Center Button and you're in business. Works great.

With adapted manual lenses on the Sony A7, focus peaking can work normally, but focus magnification may not trigger automatically because the camera often can't detect manual focusing through a passive adapter. That means it isn't lens-specific so much as adapter/manual-focus behavior.

A practical workaround is to use focus magnification manually:

  • Enable Focus Magnifier in the camera menu.
  • Set the magnification time to No Limit.
  • Assign Focus Magnifier to a custom button.
  • Press that custom button, then use the center button to magnify the focus area.

So, adapted lenses may not auto-activate focus magnification, but you can still use it reliably by assigning it to a custom button and triggering it yourself.
