I shoot RAW on a Canon EOS 750D, and Lightroom 3 will not open the camera’s .CR2 files. I’m trying to avoid a monthly subscription. Is there a way to make these files work in Lightroom 3, or do I need a newer program? What alternative software options are available?

Support for Canon 750D camera need Lightroom version 6 (check this document) You can continue using LR 3, but before open RAW files you need to convert them to DNG with this software for example (its free) Or you can buy perpetual license for LR 6 here.
