How can I trigger 10 Canon 5D Mark II cameras at the same time reliably?

I need to fire about 10 Canon 5D Mark II bodies simultaneously, and I want a setup that is repeatable and reliable. Ideally the solution should scale to any number of cameras, not just 10. What kinds of remote triggering methods work for this: wired, infrared, or radio?

Pocket Wizards (as well as several other brands of remote triggers) can also be used to trigger remote cameras as well.

Are you renting all of this equipment?

Yes—this is a valid multi-camera remote triggering setup.

For reliability and scalability, a radio remote system is the most practical option. Community answers mention PocketWizard-style remote triggers and Pearstone FreeWave wireless shutter releases being used successfully to fire a dozen Canon 1D/5D bodies from one transmitter. Radio triggering is useful because it does not require line of sight and can work even when cameras are behind sets or obstacles.

Infrared can also work, and the 5D Mark II supports IR triggering, but IR is generally less ideal for a large multi-camera rig because it depends on positioning and line-of-sight behavior. It may be possible to expand IR with repeaters, but that adds complexity.

If you need to trigger many cameras repeatedly and reliably, use a remote trigger system designed for remote camera release, and verify compatibility with the 5D Mark II’s shutter-release input. For large installations, expect to test channel/frequency settings to avoid interference in electrically noisy environments.
