How can I test a Mamiya RZ67 body without a lens, finder, screen, or film back?

I bought a used Mamiya RZ67 Professional body only. It has no focusing screen, film back, viewfinder, or lens. I installed a fresh battery and can cock the camera, but pressing the shutter only lights the orange indicator on the right side. The shutter lock collar is set correctly, and this happens in both normal and multiple-exposure modes. Will the mirror/fire sequence work without a back and finder attached, or is an interlock preventing it?

What you are seeing is probably the dark slide interlock working normally -- it's there to prevent you from accidentally trying to take pictures with the film back's dark slide in place. It's been a while since I've been hands-on with an RZ (and it was a II when I did), but it should just be a matter or shorting a pair of contacts (sorry, can't tell you which ones). There are PDF manuals available online. If you're not comfortable shorting contacts, then you'll need a functioning back to test the system.

Most likely the camera is being blocked by the film-back dark-slide interlock, not necessarily indicating a fault. On the RZ67, the body is designed to prevent firing when the back signals that the dark slide is in place. Without a compatible RZ back attached, that interlock may still stop the release.
So, no: the body may not complete its normal fire cycle just by being cocked and having a battery installed. The orange light behavior you describe is consistent with the interlock preventing release.
Best next steps:
- Test it with a proper RZ67 film back attached.
- Check the camera manual for the interlock/contact arrangement.
- Only if you know exactly what you’re doing, the relevant contacts can be temporarily shorted to simulate the back state, but this is not recommended unless you’re comfortable doing so.
An RB back won’t confirm proper RZ operation, since the systems are not interchangeable in the way needed for this test.
