How can I take exposures longer than 30 seconds on a Canon EOS M50?

I want to use a Canon EOS M50 for astrophotography and need exposures longer than the normal 30-second shutter-speed limit. Is there a way to go beyond 30 seconds on this camera, either in-camera or with software/accessories?

You don't need other firmware to expose for longer than 30 seconds, you can simply use bulb mode.
- This is an explanation on what bulb mode is
- This video explains how you can use it on the M50. Probably your manual also describes how to use it (but I can't get the PDF to load at the moment).
You'll find that keeping the shutter open manually in bulb mode is no fun. This earlier question looks into ways of starting and stopping a bulb exposure without holding the shutter button.

Yes. On the EOS M50, exposures longer than 30 seconds are done with bulb mode, not by extending the normal shutter-speed menu.
Set the camera to Manual mode, then scroll the shutter speed past 30" to Bulb. In bulb mode, the shutter stays open until you stop the exposure.
For practical use, you’ll usually want one of these:
- remote shutter release: start exposure with one press, stop with another
- intervalometer remote: lets you set an exact bulb duration
- Canon EOS Utility: can control bulb exposures from a computer
- astrophotography software such as BackyardEOS or AstroDSLR, if your setup is supported
Holding the shutter button manually for long exposures is inconvenient and can introduce vibration, so a remote or software control is the better option.
So the short answer is: the M50 already supports exposures longer than 30 seconds via bulb mode.
