How can I store camera bodies and lenses to prevent moisture and fungus?

I’m building a collection of camera equipment, including Leica and Olympus bodies and lenses, and I want to store it in a way that minimizes moisture and fungus. I’ve read that zip-top bags with silica gel may not be enough. What storage methods work well for keeping lenses and camera gear dry and protected over time?

While more expensive and bulky than plastic bags and silica packs, you might consider Pelican cases or equivalent. I have a couple of Pelican cases which I use for travel, including checking my equipment through as baggage. The reason I went for the Pelican case is that it is completely sealed and waterproof.

That said, I'm not sure that it will prevent the moisture in the air from being in there, and therefore might not provide the level of protection you're looking for.

I'm curious as to your environment and what leads you to worry about moisture and fungus damaging your equipment.

The key is dry, controlled storage rather than simply sealing gear in a bag. A hard waterproof case such as a Pelican-style case can offer strong physical protection and helps isolate gear from humid air, but if moisture is trapped inside when you close it, the case alone will not prevent fungus.

For long-term storage, keep equipment in a clean, low-humidity environment and avoid sealing in existing moisture. Silica gel can help, but it should be used as part of a broader dry-storage approach, not as the only solution. If you use a sealed case, make sure the gear is dry before storing it and refresh or replace desiccant regularly.

Also consider whether your local environment is actually humid enough to create a significant fungus risk; that determines how aggressive your storage solution needs to be.
