How can I see my camera’s LCD for video in bright sunlight?

I normally shoot stills through the optical viewfinder, but when recording video I have to use Live View on the rear LCD. In very bright conditions, such as at the beach, the screen reflects so much that I mostly see my own reflection and can’t judge focus well. Is there an easy solution for this?

What you want is a plastic, often foldable cover to go over your LCD screen similar to what Hasselblad camera's and other top level viewfinder camera's would have.

You could easily craft one yourself from black paper just to experiment with it without spending much. If you have a Nikon I know they have plastic LCD protectors that snap on to the back LCD. You could make something attached to that cover so you don't have to stick anything on the camera itself.

If you're fine with that solution you can look for a product made specifically for your camera model in any online or IRL photography related shop.

Looks like this product snaps on the back of a Nikon LCD like that (note that I have no experience with the product or seller whatsoever, just as an example):

Yes. The usual fix is an LCD sun hood or shade that blocks stray light from hitting the rear screen. These are often plastic and foldable, and some are made for specific camera models so they clip or snap onto the LCD area.

If you want to test the idea cheaply, you can even make a simple hood yourself from black card or paper to see whether it solves the problem before buying one.

The goal is simply to shade the screen so you can see the Live View image and focus more easily in bright sun. If your camera has a removable LCD protector or accessory frame, that can also provide a convenient mounting point for a homemade or commercial hood.
