How can I safely remove a stuck lens from a Canon 50D?

My Canon 50D has a 50mm lens stuck on the body and it will not disengage when I try to remove it. The nearest repair shop is very far away, so I’d like to know if there’s a safe way to detach it myself without damaging the camera further.

If you are pushing the unlock button, then the lens should turn (same direction as if you were unscrewing it). As far a I can tell the lock pin is directly linked to the push button (if the pin is stuck the button won't move), and you should be able to push down the button until it is flush with the casing around it.

If the lens still doesn't move try using a lens filter wrench or a strap wrench.

Now if the lens is broken, the damage may include the mount and the body so removing the lens won't help because you won't be able to put another lens in its place.

On a Canon 50D, press and hold the lens release button fully, then rotate the lens in the normal removal direction. The button should press in until it sits nearly flush with the surrounding casing; if it does not, the lock pin may be jammed.

If the release button is moving normally but the lens still will not turn, try a rubber lens filter wrench or a strap wrench for extra grip. Use gentle, even pressure rather than force.

If the lens is broken, the damage may involve the lens mount or the camera body as well. In that case, even if you do get the lens off, the mount may not be usable with another lens until repaired.

Avoid using excessive force or metal tools, since that can damage the mount further. If the lens still won’t come free, professional repair is the safest option.
