How can I release the shutter on a Canon EOS M50 when the focus box is red at very close distances?

On my Canon EOS M50, when I try to photograph something from just a few inches away, the focus box turns red and the camera won’t focus. I understand this can happen when I’m closer than the lens’s minimum focusing distance, but I still want to take the photo anyway, even if it ends up out of focus. Is there a way to make the camera take the shot despite the red focus indicator?

The manual is online but quite tedious to page through online so I don't have the absolute definitive answer but what you want to do is to be able to release the shutter without focus being achieved. You might be able to do this by setting the camera to manual focus (pg 143) and trying a shot. There are other issues with doing this, the lens body combination may not be able to focus as close as you wish and the subject may bee in varying degrees of focus (or out-of-focus) but you will have to work that out once you can get a shot from where you want.

Yes — try switching the camera/lens to manual focus. That usually allows the shutter to be released without autofocus locking first.
The red focus box is showing that autofocus cannot achieve focus, often because you’re inside the lens’s minimum focusing distance. In that situation, autofocus may refuse to confirm focus, but manual focus can still let you take the picture “as is.”
Keep in mind that if the subject is closer than the lens can focus, the image may remain blurry no matter what focus setting you use. If you need a sharp close-up, you’ll need to move farther back or use equipment meant for closer focusing, such as a macro-capable lens.
