How can I place a large semi-translucent photo onto a painted, textured canvas board?

I want to add a large-format, semi-translucent photographic image to a canvas board that has already been painted and has surface texture. I first considered coating the board with clear resin and then printing directly onto the resin, but local print shops said that likely would not work. What practical methods are used to get photographs onto unusual or textured surfaces like this?

Most modern large-format plotters used by specialist print companies can print on a variety of surfaces, including canvas, acetate, and Tyvek. I would think your best option is to print onto acetate (transparency) and fix that to the canvas board somehow, perhaps on top of or embedded in the resin you mentioned.

Directly printing onto a cured resin-coated textured board is generally not something standard photo labs can do. More practical options are:
-
Print the image on a transparent material, such as acetate/transparency film, using a specialist large-format printer, then mount or embed that onto the canvas board, potentially under or within a clear resin layer.
-
Use a transfer process: print the image in reverse onto a prepared sheet and transfer it onto the final surface. This is often used for wood and other nonstandard materials, but results can vary and usually need testing.
-
Apply a liquid photographic emulsion to the surface and expose/process the image there. This can work well for mixed-media art, but it is more specialized, usually black-and-white, and requires darkroom technique and experimentation.
For a semi-translucent look, the acetate/transparency route is likely the simplest starting point. Because your surface is already textured and painted, expect to do small tests first to see how the texture, adhesion, and final clarity behave.
