How can I open .dat files from a Fujifilm FinePix AV100?

A client sent me two files from a Fujifilm FinePix AV100, but they have a .dat extension instead of a normal image format. I need to know whether these are likely to be actual photos, metadata, or something else, and what I should try before asking the client to resend them.

It is most probable that what you have received is not an image and it is just some metadata from the camera (or EXIF data) in .DAT format. So, you could ask your client to recheck his mail attachments.

Or, before doing that, there's one more thing you could do.

Sometimes video files are also stored as .DAT, and unless you are 100% sure that it could NOT be a video file you may use any of the software on this link to convert your file into some 'playable' format to check if it's a video or not.

A .dat file from a camera is not a standard photo format by itself, so it could be a few different things:

  • metadata or camera-side support files rather than the actual image
  • a video file stored with a .dat extension
  • an image file with the wrong extension

In this case, the most likely practical check is to try renaming the file extension to .jpg and opening it. That can happen if software changes the extension during import or copying. If that does not work, the file may be metadata rather than a photo, or possibly a video file.

If renaming doesn’t help, ask the client to verify the original files on the camera or resend the images directly in their native format.
