How can I move Lightroom photos to a NAS without losing edit settings?

I import photos from an SD card to my Mac in Lightroom, develop my RAW files, export selected JPGs, and then move the whole folder (RAW + JPG) to a NAS for archive storage. I originally did this so editing would be faster from local storage while finished files live on the NAS.
I’ve now found that when I move the folders from my Mac to the NAS outside Lightroom, Lightroom seems to lose track of the edits unless they’re still in the catalog. I had assumed the edits were written into the RAW files, but it looks like Lightroom keeps them in the catalog by default.
What’s the best way to preserve Lightroom development work when moving photo folders to a NAS?

Move the files within Lightroom's interface, rather than from the operating system.
After you've moved the files, open Lightroom, right click on the folder you moved in the catalog (should have a question mark) and select Update Folder Location.
You can also save edits to RAW files to XMP sidecar files or use DNG/TIFF files and have the edits stored in the file metadata.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Lightroom normally stores RAW edit settings in its catalog, not in the RAW file itself. So if you move folders in Finder instead of inside Lightroom, Lightroom loses the file path and your edits appear missing.
Best practice:
- Keep the Lightroom catalog on your local drive.
- Add the NAS as a storage location inside Lightroom.
- Move folders from local storage to the NAS using Lightroom’s Folders panel, not the operating system.
If you already moved them outside Lightroom, reconnect them by right-clicking the missing folder and choosing Update Folder Location.
For extra protection, enable metadata writing:
- Automatically write changes into XMP
- Include development settings in metadata for JPEG/TIFF/PNG/PSD
With RAW files, Lightroom writes edits to XMP sidecar files unless you use DNG, where metadata can be stored in the file itself. This helps preserve edits if files are moved or re-imported, though the catalog is still the main source Lightroom uses.
You can also use Smart Previews so you can browse and even edit while the NAS is offline.
