How can I make portrait images display upright on a Canon 5D Mark IV?

On my Canon 5D Mark IV, portrait-oriented photos often play back sideways on the camera screen, which makes them hard to show to clients. I’d like portrait images to display upright during playback if possible. Is there a camera setting for this, or do I have to rotate each image manually?

Yes. On the Canon 5D Mark IV, check the Auto Rotate setting in the yellow setup/tools menu. The camera offers three Auto Rotate options. If you want portrait images to stay sideways on the camera but rotate correctly on a computer, choose “Only on computer” (the middle option).
If your goal is to have images display upright on the camera during playback, use one of the other Auto Rotate options that includes camera playback rather than the computer-only setting.
So you do not need to manually rotate each photo just to view it properly; this is controlled by the camera’s Auto Rotate playback setting.
