How can I keep a Canon 5D Mark IV set to the CF card instead of switching to SD?

On a Canon 5D Mark IV, I use both a CF card and an SD card with Record func+card/folder sel. set to Standard, and I want the camera to keep recording to the CF card.
If I turn the camera off and remove the CF card to import photos, the camera switches to the SD card the next time it powers on, even if I reinsert the CF card before turning the camera back on.
Is there a way to prevent the camera from automatically changing to the SD card so I do not have to reselect the CF card each time?

If you leave the memory card door open after you remove the CF card, it will stay in CF card priority.
There is also a firmware add-on for certain Canon cameras called "Magic Lantern". Magic Lantern is not yet available for the 5D Mark IV but on the 5D Mark III, it adds many useful tools and features to the basic Canon menu options. One of these is the option to always select the CF card.

Yes—this behavior is triggered when the camera sees the CF slot empty while the card door is closed. To avoid it, don’t let the camera register the SD card as the only available card.
Two practical ways mentioned are:
- Leave the memory card door open while the CF card is out. That keeps the camera from switching away from CF priority.
- Or remove the SD card first. If there is no SD card in the camera when you close the card door, it won’t auto-switch to SD.
So, with the stock 5D Mark IV behavior, there does not appear to be a menu setting to lock recording permanently to CF when that card has been removed. The workaround is to keep the door open during CF removal, or remove the SD card before closing the door.
