I use a Canon G12 and only have the built-in flash. My photos often look harsh when I use it. What can I do to get better results, and are there simple ways to soften the light from the built-in flash without buying a separate flash unit?

I find that the main problem with built-in flashes is that they give a very harsh light.
Try making or buying a diffuser / deflecter. If you have some spare white plastic or translucent plastic, cut a piece and experiment with some blu-tac or tape.

The main limitation of a built-in flash is that it’s a very small light source close to the lens, which tends to create harsh light and hard shadows. A simple way to improve it is to diffuse or deflect the flash.
You can try making or buying a small diffuser/deflector for the G12’s flash. Even a piece of white or translucent plastic can help spread the light and make it less harsh. People often experiment with homemade diffusers attached temporarily with tape or reusable adhesive.
Keep in mind that a diffuser won’t turn the built-in flash into a truly large light source, but it can soften the effect and improve the look of close-range shots. The best approach is to experiment with different materials and positions to see what gives the most natural result.
