How can I improve autofocus speed and accuracy on a Samsung Galaxy S?

My Samsung Galaxy S can take decent photos and video, but only when focus locks properly. It often loses focus easily and the image becomes blurry. Are there any practical ways to improve autofocus speed or accuracy on this phone, especially in everyday shooting?

I think you've run up against the limitation of the fact that its a multi function device that also includes a camera.

The camera focuses by contrast, so pointing at a particularly 'contrasty' portion of your subject may help. Additionally, in lower light an additional light, like a flashlight, may help (some users report that using a laser to aid focus works well).

As far as modifying the camera or additional software for the device to focus better, its currently unlikely.

There are a few practical things you can try, but the main limitation is the phone itself: it uses contrast-detect autofocus, which is generally less reliable and slower than dedicated camera systems.

To help it focus better:

  • Aim the focus area at something with clear contrast or edges rather than a flat, low-detail surface.
  • Give the camera more light. Autofocus usually works better in brighter scenes.
  • In low light, adding a small external light source can help the camera find focus.

Beyond that, there usually isn’t much you can do through mods or software to meaningfully improve the hardware’s focusing performance. So the best improvements come from technique: use better lighting and focus on high-contrast parts of the subject whenever possible.
