How can I fix incorrect flash exposure with a Metz 48 AF-1 on a Pentax K-3 II?

A Metz 48 AF-1 flash worked correctly on a Pentax K-5 and K-x, but on a Pentax K-3 II it appeared to fire at full power and caused frequent overexposure. Is there a known fix for this compatibility issue?

The metz 48 AF1 has USB updatable firmware. The latest version was released about the same time as the Pentax K5ii, so it doesn't mention the K3 bodies in it's release notes. But we thought it was worth a try.
A quick firmware update on the flash later and it's now working perfectly with the K3ii.

Yes. A firmware update for the Metz 48 AF-1 can fix this kind of TTL exposure problem on newer Pentax bodies.
In the reported case, the flash worked normally on older cameras but overexposed on the Pentax K-3 II, as if it were firing at full power. Updating the flash firmware via the Metz USB update feature resolved the issue and restored normal operation.
If you see similar behavior, check the flash’s current firmware version and install the latest available update from Metz. Even if the release notes do not explicitly mention the K-3 II, compatibility improvements for newer camera bodies may still be included.
