How can I find photos with one keyword but exclude another in Lightroom?

In Lightroom Classic, I keyword some photos with individual names and some with multiple names. For example, some photos are tagged Max, some Maddie, and some have both Max and Maddie. How can I search so I see photos tagged with Max but not Maddie? If Lightroom can do an exact "only this one keyword and no others" search, how would I do that?

It actually works the way you would expect, it's just not documented (at least as far as I know...I had to experiment to figure this out). In library module, grid mode, enable Text search. Choose Keywords -> Contain, and type in "Max !Maddie". You should get a list of results that contain the keyword Max exclusive of the keyword Maddie.
Now, that is not the same as a purely exclusive keyword search that will only find things with just the one keyword "Max". That is different than a "keyword exclusive of" search where you explicitly exclude one or more keywords in favor of one or more keywords. If you truly want to search for just a single keyword and nothing else at all, I am not really sure how to do that.

In Lightroom’s Library module, you can filter for one keyword while excluding another.
Two common ways:
- Use the Library Filter bar in Grid view:
- Enable Text search
- Set it to Keywords → Contain
- Search for:
Max !Maddie
- Or start from the keyword list:
- In Keyword List, find Max
- Click the arrow next to it to show photos with that keyword
- In the Filter bar’s Text section, choose Keywords → Don’t contain →
Maddie
That will return photos tagged with Max and exclude any also tagged Maddie.
Based on the answers, Lightroom’s built-in filter does not appear to offer a true “show only photos whose keywords are exactly Max and nothing else” search. It can exclude specific unwanted keywords, but not reliably limit results to one and only one keyword unless you manually exclude the others.
