How can I edit a cloudy sky without making it look harsh or unnatural?

I’m editing a landscape with a yellow field and a cloudy sky. When I try to bring out the clouds using contrast, texture, clarity, or dehaze, the sky starts to look messy and unnatural. I’ve tried sky masking, some desaturation, and reducing clarity/contrast/texture, and I don’t want to use sky replacement because I want the scene to stay realistic.

What’s a good approach for editing a difficult cloudy sky so it still looks natural? Also, if the field/grass is really the subject, should I be focusing less on the sky in post and more on composition when shooting?

For clouds I usually select sky, decrease a bit exposure, decrease contrast, decrease texture, clarity and dehaze. And here is the result. enter image description here Of course it is a matter of personal taste, but usually clouds should not have sharp edges, some smooth view is more pleasant and (IMHO) more natural.

A natural-looking edit usually means doing less to the sky, not more. Based on the advice given, a good starting point is to mask/select the sky and make subtle reductions: slightly lower exposure, contrast, texture, clarity, and dehaze. That can keep the clouds smoother and more believable instead of creating crunchy edges or a messy look.

Clouds generally look more natural with softer transitions rather than strong local-contrast enhancement. If heavy edits make the sky distracting, that’s a sign to back off.

The bigger question is your intent. If the field or grass is the real subject, editing the sky won’t solve a composition problem. In that case, focus more on how the image is shot: get closer, try a lower angle, and make the grass more prominent. If there isn’t a strong reason to dramatize the sky, it’s often best to respect the original scene and keep the edit restrained.
