How can I cut out children from a busy background in photo editing?

I need to isolate a group of children from a complex, detailed background where there isn’t a strong edge or tonal separation between subject and background. I’m looking for practical ways to approach this in an editor like Photoshop or GIMP, especially for difficult areas such as hair. What tools or workflow would you recommend?

I have only access to GIMP, which has a specialized foreground selection tool, and it's still not precise enough to select objects on a complex background. My approach would be to try that and than perhaps refine edit the selection using masks, which probably would work very for hair and similar stuff.

IMO the best bet way to handle this situation is to avoid it by shooting on simple black/white background if you know you'll want cutouts.

For this kind of image, there usually isn’t a one-click solution. On a busy background with weak subject separation, automatic selection tools often get you only part of the way.

A practical workflow is:

  1. Start with a foreground/subject selection tool to get a rough selection.
  2. Convert that to a layer mask.
  3. Manually refine the mask, especially around hair, edges, and overlapping details.

The key point is that complex backgrounds often require hand cleanup after the initial selection. Fine detail like hair is especially difficult, so expect to spend time refining.

If you haven’t shot the image yet and know you’ll need a cutout, the best solution is to plan for it during capture: use a simple, plain background with strong contrast from the subjects. That makes later selection much easier and more accurate.
