I want a photo to be brighter in the center and gradually darker toward the corners, like a round spotlight effect. What is this effect called in photography, and which Lightroom tool should I use to create it?

Vignetting - In the Develop module if you expand the Effects section, you will see what they call the Post-Crop Vignetting tool. Adjust the sliders as you see fit.

This effect is called a vignette, or vignetting. For the look you describe—brighter in the middle with darker edges—use Lightroom’s Post-Crop Vignetting controls in the Develop module.
Open the Effects panel, then adjust the Post-Crop Vignetting sliders to darken the corners and control how gradual or strong the effect looks. Tweak the sliders until the center stays bright and the edges fall off the way you want.
