How can I create a soft, radiant glow in Lightroom without making the image look overexposed or washed out?

I sometimes see images where the subject looks softly suffused with light, almost glowing, while colors still stay vivid. When I try to recreate this, the result just looks overexposed or low-contrast. In Lightroom, what edits create this kind of glow without washing out the whole photo? If Photoshop is better for it, what technique should I use there?

You can get a result like this by creating a duplicate layer on Photoshop, and giving it a Gaussian Blur, then lowering the opacity of that layer. This gives the image a radiant glowing effect. Also, Joshua Cripps does a good tutorial on this effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGNctntIOx8
Hope this is the effect you're looking for

Yes—this look is typically created by adding softness to bright areas rather than globally overexposing the image.
In Lightroom, use the Adjustment Brush (or a local mask) on the highlight areas you want to glow. Then:
- reduce clarity
- reduce sharpening
- raise highlights slightly
That softens edge contrast in the bright areas and creates a gentle glow while preserving the rest of the image.
In Photoshop, a common method is:
- duplicate the image layer
- apply Gaussian Blur to the duplicate
- lower that layer’s opacity until the glow looks natural
The key is to apply the effect selectively or subtly, not by lifting the whole exposure or crushing contrast across the full image. Global black-point or contrast reductions often make the image look washed out, while local softening of highlights gives the radiant effect you’re describing.
