How can I copy detail from one RGB channel to another in GIMP?

I want to retouch the whites of an eye by copying information from one color channel to the others, similar to what I used to do in Photoshop. In Photoshop, I could select the eye white and copy from the red channel into the blue and green channels. In GIMP, copying directly between channels does not seem to work the same way. What is the correct way to do this in GIMP?

In Gimp, in the colors menu, go to components and disassemble them. (Frankly, I do not know the exact wording of the menu items in Gimp's English version). Next you are asked how, go for RGB then. Now what used to be color channels are b&w layers. You can work with each layer and then re-assemble the image.

In GIMP, RGB channels are not edited quite like Photoshop channels for direct copy/paste. A practical workaround is to split the image into separate channel layers, edit them, then combine them again.
Use:
- Colors/Components → Decompose (sometimes described as disassemble)
- Choose RGB
- GIMP creates a new image with the red, green, and blue channels as separate grayscale layers
- Edit or copy/paste between those layers as needed for your selection
- When finished, use Compose/Recompose to rebuild the RGB image
So instead of copying directly from one channel to another inside the original image, you first decompose the image into channel layers, do the edits there, and then recompose it.
