How can I check whether my Sony RX100 II was damaged in shipping?

My Sony RX100 II was shipped in a padded box along with other items, and some of the other contents arrived with obvious physical damage. The camera looks protected, but I want to make sure it still works properly after the parcel may have been handled roughly.

Is there a systematic way to check a compact camera for shipping damage? What functions should I test?

As long as it still takes photographs and the files don't look crazy there are only mechanical parts you could check:

  • does the lens extend and retract without making strange noise?
  • does focusing and stabilization (if camera has one) work without making strange noise?
  • do all buttons work?
  • is the battery door opening and closing?
  • internal flash unit working properly?
  • Display OK?

Normally there is not too much that should be able to break only because the camera's box was handled a little bit rough.

Yes. For a compact camera like the RX100 II, a practical check is to run through its main mechanical and shooting functions.

Test these points:

  • Take several photos and review the files. If the images look normal and not corrupted or obviously abnormal, that’s a very good sign.
  • Check that the lens extends and retracts smoothly, without unusual resistance or strange noises.
  • Test autofocus and image stabilization, and listen for any abnormal sounds.
  • Confirm all buttons and controls respond properly.
  • Open and close the battery door to make sure it latches normally.
  • Test the built-in flash to see if it pops up and fires correctly.
  • Check the display for normal operation.

In general, if the camera powers on, shoots normally, saves clean-looking files, and all moving parts and controls work as expected, it is probably fine. On a camera like this, there usually aren’t many hidden issues caused solely by rough parcel handling unless you notice obvious functional problems, unusual noises, or visible damage.
