I want to find out how many photos have been taken with a Canon EOS 1000D. I’ve looked through the software that came with the camera but haven’t found it. Is there a way to check the shutter count or at least the total image count from the camera or image files?

The shutter count should be in the EXIF information, which you can read with ExifTool or other EXIF readers.

Or you can upload a JPG to myshuttercount and it will tell you.

You can estimate or read it a couple of ways:

  1. Check EXIF data: Some tools such as ExifTool or online services like myshuttercount may read the shutter count from a JPEG file.

  2. Use the file numbering on the camera/card: This works if the camera is set to continuous file numbering.

    • On playback, note the image number shown.
    • The 1000D numbers files like 100-0001 up to 100-9999, then continues as 101-0001.
    • In the card’s DCIM folder, images are stored in folders such as 100CANON, 101CANON, etc.
    • Example: if your latest file is _MG_4563.JPG in 103CANON, that indicates about 34,563 images taken.

Keep in mind this is a file count, not always a guaranteed true shutter-actuation count, especially if numbering has been reset or changed.
