How can I avoid blurry indoor portraits of a moving child with a Canon Rebel XTi?

I'm a beginner using a Canon Rebel XTi and trying to take indoor portraits of my son. My photos often come out blurry because the shutter speed is too slow in low light, but when I increase the shutter speed the image gets too dark. I may be using the kit lens. What settings, techniques, or gear changes would help me get sharper indoor portraits of a child who moves around? Would a different lens or flash help?

Yes—this is a very common indoor low-light problem. The blur is likely from subject movement because your shutter speed is too slow.
Based on the answers, two practical fixes are:
- Use a faster lens. If you’re using the kit lens, a lens with a wider maximum aperture, such as an f/1.8 lens, can let in much more light, allowing a faster shutter speed indoors.
- Use flash. Adding light is often the simplest way to freeze movement and avoid blur indoors.
In general, if raising shutter speed makes the photo too dark, you need more light reaching the sensor—either through a wider aperture, added flash, or both. For indoor portraits of a moving child, a fast prime lens and/or flash are usually much more effective than relying on the kit lens in room light alone.

Depending on how much light you have, you can probably get good results with an f/1.8 lens. I assume you're using the kit lens.
Otherwise, try flash.
