Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 lens cover won't close after beach use

My Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic powers off, but the lens cover does not close. This started after I used it at the beach during windy, sandy conditions. What is the likely cause, and is there anything safe I can try before taking it in for repair?

Blowing sand is the most likely cause. Fine grit can get into the lens-cover mechanism and stop it from closing fully.
Safe things to try:
- Turn the camera off and remove the battery.
- Gently inspect the cover area for visible sand.
- Use a hand air blower to puff around the lens-cover seams. Avoid canned air at close range.
- Very gently tilt the camera so loosened grit can fall out.
- Do not force the cover shut, and do not use water, solvents, or oil.
If the cover still won’t close, the mechanism may be jammed or damaged and the camera should be checked by a repair technician. Beach sand can be abrasive, so forcing it can make things worse.
