I’ve heard that some cameras let you preview the actual depth of field in the viewfinder by pressing a dedicated button. I looked for this on my Nikon D5100 but couldn’t find it. Does the D5100 support depth-of-field preview, or is there another way to check the result before shooting?

You are correct. The D5100 does not have a Depth-of-field preview functionality. If you take a look at the list of Nikon DSLRs, the one with the icons in the shape of an iris have that feature. The D7000 just below the D5100 on the list has it. Typically, this function does not make it into entry-level cameras.

The best you can do it take a test shot and zoom on on your display to see the depth-of-field you got.

No. The Nikon D5100 does not include a depth-of-field preview function. On cameras that have this feature, a button stops the lens down to the selected aperture so you can see the actual depth of field through the viewfinder. This is more common on higher-tier DSLR bodies and is typically omitted from entry-level models like the D5100.

With the D5100, the practical workaround is to take a test shot and review it on the rear screen, then zoom in to check what is and isn’t in focus.
