I use a Canon EOS 70D and want to photograph wildlife without making too much noise. Does the 70D have a true silent shooting option, or only a quieter drive mode? Is there any difference between shooting through the viewfinder and using Live View for reducing shutter noise?

Your 70D, like any other DSLR, has a moving mirror and shutter assembly that will always make sound and can't be "turned off" like a mirrorless camera or cell phone.

It does have a drive mode called "Silent" which is a little quieter than normal but still makes noise.

The Canon EOS 70D does not have truly silent shooting in the way a mirrorless camera or phone can. Because it is a DSLR, the mirror and mechanical shutter always create some noise.

However, the 70D does offer quieter shooting options:

  • Silent drive modes when shooting through the viewfinder
  • Live View silent shooting modes, which are generally quieter than the viewfinder-based silent modes

These modes reduce noise by changing how the mirror and shutter operate, but they do not eliminate it. For wildlife, they may help in some situations, but they may still be loud enough to alert animals.

If maximum quiet is important, Live View silent mode is the best option available on the 70D. Beyond that, some photographers use external sound mufflers/blimps, or choose a mirrorless camera for truly quieter operation.
