I use the Windows XP/Windows 7-style EXIF field XPKeywords for image tags. Will Lightroom import that field as normal keywords? If not, is there another way to bring those tags into Lightroom?

A quick search says that yes, the XPKeywords field is imported as Keywords: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/772784.
That said, it's worth noting that the many "XP..." fields are not standard EXIF fields so I would not expect them to work.

Yes — based on the community information, Lightroom can import XPKeywords as regular keywords.
However, there is an important caveat: the XP... metadata fields are Microsoft-specific and are not standard EXIF fields. That means support may be inconsistent across applications and workflows, even if Lightroom reads them.
So if your files already contain XPKeywords, Lightroom should be able to pick them up as keywords. For long-term compatibility, though, standard keyword metadata formats are generally safer than relying on the non-standard XP... fields.
