When editing photos in Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP 4), are adjustment changes saved automatically, or do you need to manually save them?

You have to save them. The easiest way to apply changes to all edited images I found is to switch the working directory - DPP asks you to save changes to all edited files then.
It is very annoying, since the program tends to crash frequently, so it is easy to loose hours of work if you work on a large picture set and don't save the changes.

You need to save your edits manually. In DPP 4, changes are not automatically committed for you, so if you close the program or it crashes before saving, you can lose your work. One practical workflow mentioned by users is changing the working folder, which prompts DPP to ask whether you want to save edits for all modified files. If you’re editing a large batch, save regularly to avoid losing adjustments.
