Do I need VR lenses on a Nikon D5600, and is the AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G OK without VR?

I’m new to DSLR photography and use a Nikon D5600. Since this camera doesn’t have in-body image stabilization, do I need to buy only Nikon lenses with VR? I’m considering the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G, but it does not have VR. Is that still a suitable lens for the D5600?

There are no Nikon cameras with image stabilization in the body. It's always in the lens, if at all. You don't need to buy VR lenses — although of course if you don't, you won't have image stabilization. This is the case with all Nikon DSLRs, not just the D5600.

I understand where you confusion comes from, because higher-end Nikon bodies have autofocus motors, allowing them to drive (mostly, older or special-purpose) lenses which expect that and don't have their own motors. But for VR, the situation is different.

See Is optical image stabilization a necessary feature for any lens? for some discussion on how vital image stabilization is as a feature overall. The usefulness depend heavily on what you're shooting and how you are doing it. It's also worth noting that while it provides some benefit on a "normal" focal length like 35mm, it's generally more important at longer focal lengths.

Yes — you can use non-VR lenses on the Nikon D5600. Nikon DSLRs generally do not have in-body image stabilization, so stabilization, when available, is built into the lens as VR. But VR is optional, not required.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is fully usable on your D5600 even though it has no VR. The only thing you give up is stabilization assistance at slower shutter speeds.

Whether VR matters depends on what you shoot. It can help reduce blur from camera shake, especially in low light, but it does not make a lens mandatory or universally better. A fast lens like the 35mm f/1.8 can often compensate by letting in more light, allowing faster shutter speeds.

So: yes, you can buy and use the 35mm f/1.8G on your D5600 without any problem.
