Do I need to remove the hot shoe cover to take photos on an Olympus Trip 35?

I’m new to film cameras and recently bought an Olympus Trip 35. On top of the camera there’s a small cover over the hot shoe contacts between the rails. When taking normal photos, especially outdoors without a flash, does that cover need to be removed, or can it stay in place?

If you are referring to the centre part of the camera, with the two rails and the silver dot surrounded by black plastic - no, you do not need to remove the cap. This is known as a hotshoe. Its purpose is to allow you to connect an external flash and allows the camera to trigger it.

No. You can leave the hot shoe cover in place when taking normal photos.
That part is the hot shoe, which is used to attach an external flash. The cover simply protects the contact area when no flash is being used. It does not affect regular picture-taking, including outdoor shooting.
You would only remove it if you want to mount a compatible flash or other hot-shoe accessory.
