I'm new to film photography and just bought a Minolta Hi-Matic F with Kodak Gold 200 film. I want to shoot both landscapes and portraits. Do I need a flash for either of those, especially since the camera didn't come with one? Also, what ISO should I set on the camera when using Kodak Gold 200?

The short answer: get a cheap digital camera (or just start with your phone) and learn with that first. Film is an expensive way to make mistakes.

The longer answer:

  • No, you don't need a flash, and definitely not for landscapes. Portraits in particular may be improved by off-camera flash.
  • In general, you set the ISO to whatever ISO your film is - i.e. 200 in your case. There are situations in which you might want to do something different, but now is not the time to worry about those.

No— you do not need a flash to start, and you generally would not use flash for landscapes. For portraits, flash can sometimes help, but it isn’t required for basic shooting. If you later use flash for portraits, off-camera flash can be more flattering than direct on-camera flash.

For ISO, set the camera to match the film speed. Since you’re using Kodak Gold 200, set the camera’s ISO/ASA to 200. Beginners usually should not change it from the film’s rated speed.

If you’re just learning exposure and composition, practicing first with a digital camera or even a phone can help because you get instant feedback and avoid the cost of film mistakes.
