Do DJI Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 cameras have fisheye distortion like earlier Phantom models?

I'm considering a DJI Phantom 3 or Phantom 4 and want to know whether their built-in cameras still show the strong fisheye look seen on some earlier Phantom/GoPro-based models such as the Phantom 2 Vision. Do the Phantom 3 and 4 produce noticeable fisheye distortion, or do they use a more corrected wide-angle lens?

Looking at the specs of the DJI Phantom 3 and 4, the lens is described as:

  • FOV 94° 20 mm (35 mm format equivalent) f/2.8
  • Focus at ∞

The Phantom 2 on the current DJI website comes with a GoPro Hero4 Black, which (if you're shooting 16x9) has a 118.2º HFOV (the narrower fields of view settings are done by cropping).

So, I'd say that, no, it's probably not going to be giving you much fisheye to go with the integrated camera on the Phantom 3 and 4. Footage on Youtube from the Phantom 4 pretty much bears this out.

No—compared with earlier GoPro-based Phantom setups, the Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 are generally not known for the same obvious fisheye look.

The key difference is the camera/lens design. Phantom 3 and 4 models use an integrated wide-angle lens specified around 94° field of view (about 20mm equivalent), which is much less extreme than a typical GoPro-style lens. Community responses note these models use a rectilinear wide-angle lens, so straight lines are kept straighter rather than being bent outward in a fisheye pattern.

By contrast, earlier setups using action cameras often had much wider fields of view, which created the familiar fisheye distortion.

So if you're choosing between them specifically for reduced fisheye distortion, the Phantom 3 and 4 should be noticeably better than earlier GoPro-based Phantom models.
