Creative ways to get more exposure for your photography locally

I’m a serious hobbyist photographer and mostly shoot for myself, but I enjoy seeing my images used in the community. Recently, one of my photos was used on the cover of a neighborhood event handout, and it led to interest from a local official who wanted a print for display.
What are some creative, less obvious ways to exhibit or share photos locally that can lead to more visibility or opportunities? I’m especially interested in real-world ideas beyond just posting online.

Depends on what your goals are, of course, but I've found volunteering at a deserving charity that's in-line with what you want to be doing a good thing. If you want to focus on pets, volunteer at the local shelter taking photos of the current dogs and/or cats. Personally, I volunteer for my local Make-A-Wish chapter and do a few events for them.
Get some business cards (I like Moo) and hand them out.

A few practical offline ideas came up:
- Volunteer your photography for a cause that fits your interests. Examples mentioned were photographing adoptable pets for a shelter or covering events for a local charity. This gets your work seen while supporting something worthwhile.
- Keep business cards handy so people who like your work can easily follow up.
- Display prints in everyday public spaces such as apartment lobbies.
- Ask bars or restaurants if they show local artwork. One answer noted this led to a gallery connection and later exhibition opportunities.
In general, the most effective “offbeat” exposure often comes from placing your work where people naturally gather, especially in community spaces tied to your subject matter. If you want more local recognition, think about venues where your images feel relevant and approachable, and make it easy for interested viewers to contact you.
