Canon Rebel T6 autofocus works once, then hunts after each shot

A Canon Rebel T6 focuses normally through the viewfinder when first turned on, but after taking one photo it will only hunt back and forth and cannot lock focus. The issue persists across multiple lenses, and power cycling or removing the battery does not help. After waiting several minutes, autofocus works again briefly. Live View autofocus still works, though slowly. What camera-side fault could cause viewfinder AF to fail only after a shot?

Thanks to @xenoid , I checked out the secondary mirror and found that it wasn’t moving all the way into position after taking a photo, so the AF sensor wasn’t receiving the correct light. Closer inspection revealed a broken hinge on the secondary mirror, shown in the photo below. Looks like I’m taking this camera apart.

This points to a problem in the DSLR viewfinder AF path, not the lens. Since Live View AF still works, the imaging sensor and lens communication are likely OK. The likely cause is the secondary mirror not returning fully to its correct position after the shutter cycle. When that happens, the dedicated AF sensor below the mirror box doesn’t get the proper light, so the camera just hunts and never achieves focus through the viewfinder. In the reported case, inspection found a broken hinge on the secondary mirror. If you’re repairing it yourself, inspect the main/secondary mirror mechanism and linkage carefully; damage or misalignment there can cause exactly this behavior.
