My Canon EOS 1000D has a shutter that appears to be stuck. I already tried a few suggested tricks, including using Bulb mode and removing the battery during an exposure, but that did not help. Is this likely to be a known issue with a simple fix, or does it usually require professional repair?

It was a mechanical issue. I had to replace the whole shutter.

A stuck shutter on an EOS 1000D is most likely a mechanical failure rather than a setting or battery issue. Based on the reported outcome, the fix was replacing the entire shutter assembly. In practice, shutter problems in DSLRs are usually not user-serviceable, so if basic power resets have not helped, the camera will generally need professional repair. Because the 1000D is an older entry-level DSLR, it is worth comparing the repair cost with the value of the camera before proceeding.
