Canon 6D battery grip: does the battery indicator show one battery or both?

I’m using a Canon 6D with a battery grip that holds two batteries for time-lapse shooting. With a single battery, I get about 4 hours. After installing the grip and using two batteries, the camera still showed the battery as nearly depleted after about 4 hours.
Does the 6D’s battery indicator represent the total remaining charge from both batteries in the grip, or can it show incorrectly? I had assumed the grip would draw from both batteries and the indicator would reflect the combined capacity.
Also, does the grip’s on/off switch affect battery usage, or is it only for the grip controls?

As per my instruction manual: "Be sure to attach the battery grip to the camera before inserting the batteries. The results of the battery check may not be displayed properly if you attach the battery grip to the camera with the batteries already inside."
Also the battery grip power button is specifically for the additional camera controls on the battery grip. I keep mine off unless I'm shooting vertically but I don't think it will make any noticeable difference to the battery life.
Note: I'm using a 3rd party battery grip on my 6D

The battery reading may be inaccurate if the grip was attached after the batteries were already inserted. According to the manual guidance quoted in the community answer, you should attach the battery grip to the camera first, then insert the batteries. Otherwise the battery check may not display properly.
Also, the grip’s on/off switch is for the extra controls on the grip, not for enabling battery power from the grip itself. Turning it on or off should not make a meaningful difference to runtime.
So if your 6D appeared almost depleted after about the same time as a single battery, the first thing to check is the installation order of the grip and batteries. Reattach the grip properly and test again. If the display then behaves normally, the issue was likely the battery-status reporting rather than the grip failing to use both batteries.
