Canon 60D not recognizing a Speedlite 580EX II in E-TTL

My Canon 580EX II works normally on a Canon 20D, but on my 60D it doesn't seem to be recognized properly in E-TTL. The flash is seated correctly, the contacts are clean, and the flash LCD responds when I change exposure compensation and zoom on the camera. I also checked the camera's flash control menu, confirmed flash is enabled in E-TTL II, and reset custom functions. However, the external-flash indicator does not appear in the 60D viewfinder, while the built-in flash indicator does. Is there an obvious setting on the flash that could cause this?

Your flash is probably set as slave. Check the switch for master/slave/off next to the flash shoe. It should be set to off, when it is mounted to a camera or to master when it actually masters other ETTL slaves. But unless it really is a slave, mastered by another ETTL master, then it should not be set to slave.

A likely cause is that the 580EX II is set to slave mode. When the flash is mounted directly on the camera hot shoe, it should generally be set to off (normal on-camera use) or master only if you’re controlling other compatible slave flashes. If it’s in slave, the camera may not recognize or use it as a normal on-camera E-TTL flash.
Check the power/mode switch near the flash foot and make sure it is not set to slave. Since the flash works on your 20D, this is the most obvious setting to verify first.
If changing it from slave fixes the issue, E-TTL operation on the 60D should return normally.
