Canon 1100D shows contact error with Tamron 70-300mm at 300mm

My Canon 1100D gives a lens contact/error message when I try to take a photo with my Tamron 70-300mm, especially when zoomed to 300mm. The shutter will not fire. How can I troubleshoot this, and is it likely to be dirty contacts or a compatibility issue with the lens?

This may or may not be an incorrect error. This error is most likely referring to the contacts between the camera body and the lens. Since you are using an off-brand lens, it is possible that there is a compatibility problem with the communication between the camera and lens. Has that body worked before with that lens under those conditions? If you have another camera body or lens, can the problem be reproduced with a different combination?

If it can be reproduced with a different lens, then the contacts (found around the edge of the lens socket) may in fact need to be cleaned on either the lens or the body or there may be an electrical problem with the camera or lens.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.

Start with the simple checks. Remove the lens and gently clean the electrical contacts on both the back of the lens and the contacts inside the camera mount using a clean microfiber cloth. Then reattach the lens and test again.

If the problem remains, try a different battery in the 1100D. Also test the camera with another lens, or test the Tamron lens on another compatible body if possible. That will help show whether the fault is in the camera or the lens.

Because this is a third-party Tamron lens, there is also a real chance of an electronic compatibility issue rather than dirty contacts—especially if the error only appears at 300mm. Older third-party lenses were reverse-engineered and may not communicate perfectly with some Canon bodies.

If cleaning and battery swapping do not help, and the issue follows the lens, the lens may need service or may simply have limited compatibility with that camera.
