Can you control how Facebook Timeline crops featured photos?

I use Facebook to promote my photography and noticed that when I mark an image as "Featured" on Timeline, Facebook enlarges it but also crops the top and bottom. Clicking the image shows the full photo, but the featured preview can look worse than the original post. Is there any way to control that crop or choose how the featured image is displayed, or is the only option to avoid using "Feature"?

Facebook Timeline’s featured-photo display appears to use a fixed format, so you generally can’t freely control the crop within that layout. If the automatic crop hurts the composition, the practical options are either not to feature that image or to prepare a separate version designed for Facebook’s featured aspect ratio. In other words, make a copy of the photo with extra space or a crop that suits the Timeline format, then upload/use that version for featuring. This is especially important for images whose composition doesn’t match the rigid layout, such as portraits or strongly vertical shots.

It's a shame they seem to have a rigid format, what happens if you want to feature a portrait? But the obvious solution to me is to work out the aspect ratio and prepare an image in each batch/album that fits that format.
